First time at the beach

Baby Tony has never been to the beach until yesterday. He has had his beach set, hat and sunglasses for a couple of months now and we’ve been really excited – even praying for sunny weather so we could go! 😀

We planned to go early in the morning so it won’t be too crowded but was unable to do that. We left the house at 9:30 and got to the beach at  11am. We went to Shek O Beach which, if you ask me, is the best [accessible] beach in Hong Kong. We bought a mat for $10 and rented a huge umbrella for $60.

We took out his shovel, rake, sand castle mold and bucket and he started playing.Of course we also slathered sun block on him. We bought water babies by Coppertone.

He was alright playing with the sand but I think he didn’t like to walk on it very much. We also let him stand and have the waves run to him. We think he’s observing everything and just trying to be comfortable. I’d usually carry him and we’d go to where the water level was up to his chest (and my chest too!). We know he’s okay with it because this little boy would cry if he doesn’t like something.

The entire morning, he didn’t really want to nurse. I think it’s either he’s too excited or that he’s quite sleepy. I was so happy when he finally wanted to nurse to sleep! He napped for about an hour on his blanket – still wearing his swim gear.

We had lunch and he ate the grapes and crackers we brought for him. He didn’t want any of the orange slices I brought to we ate some of it.

When we got home, he was the only one with so much energy left! Hahaha! I didn’t know how tiring it is to go to the beach with a toddler!

When did you first take your child to the beach? Did they like it? What are your tips for new parents?

Here’s my list of must-haves for a trip to the beach:

  • Swim diapers (those that do not expand) – but they don’t hold a lot of pee!
  • Snacks
  • Swim trunks and rashguard
  • Mat + Blanket (a place for them to nap on)
  • TOYS!
  • Flip flops
  • Towel + Bath soap
  • Usual nappy changing stuff
  • At least 2 sets of extra clothes

We plan to go at least once a month so Baby Tony will become comfortable on the beach. 🙂
